Peavy defeats his former team 7-2

jake peavy defeats white sox

Jake Peavy (kinda looks like Jeremy Renner, am I right?) threw 7 strong innings against his previous teammates last night, holding the White Sox to 2 runs, thus helping the Red Sox to their 6th win in a 7 game stretch. The win puts Boston ahead 4 1/2 games over the slumping Rays.

The win puts Peavy at 11-5 for the season and his ERA since joining the Red Sox is down to the low 3's. Hopefully breaking out of his own mini-slump, David Ortiz had two hits and Mike Napoli drove in another run giving him a career best season's RBI total of 76.

The guys are still playing great, gutty baseball. Clay Buccholz is hopefully on his way back and everyone seems healthy. With Pawtucket going to their own championship, minor league call-ups are problematic, but the guys look good and strong and after a couple awful years seem *crosses fingers* to be on their way to the post season.

yay!

The Rays are on the other end of the spectrum losing six of their last seven games. While losing again to the Athletics last night doesn't knock them out of the wild card race, it does close the gap with the surging Yankees to 3 1/2 games.

Tampa's got a little bit of everything going wrong now. The bats have gone stone cold and their starting pitching isn't as invincible as it was earlier in the year. And just weird stuff as well -- David Price's two hour, two hundred dollar cab ride to Oakland, closer Fernando Rodney getting locked in a bathroom for twenty minutes . . . just bizarre.

The resigning of troubled Delmon Young to bolster their offense reeks of desperation to me as does the hope that wildly underperforming Luke Scott will add anything when he returns.

I would have bet the Rays were a lock for the post season when the year began, but a rough month of September looms ahead. What a shocker if they don't make it.

Also had to laugh today as I read the Sunday paper and saw the sports writer pegging the Boston bullpen as a weakness, specifically name checking Koji Uehara. That would be the same Uehara who's converted 16 of his 19 save opportunities with a 1.19 ERA and also has the second longest active streak of scoreless innings in all of MLB!

sheesh!
