It has begun...weekly update

I've decided it's a bit too tedious to keep updating this stuff on a nightly basis, so I think I'll just keep track and then post how the Sox's season ending pitching staff tryouts are progressing on a weekly basis. To wit:

  Last appearance
Name record era pi-k innings bb k
Anthony Ranaudo 1-0 3.00 91-53 6.0 4 2
Allen Webster 2-1 4.91 84-53 6.2 2 3
Clay Buccholz 5-7 5.99 120-76 8.0 2 8
Rubby de la Rosa 4-4 3.21 110-67 7.0 3 8
Joe Kelly 2-2 3.86 97-53 7.0 4 2
Brandon Workman 1-5 4.31 96-61 5.1 2 5

Webster rebounded after his awful performance against the Yankees to get a win along with another solid start from de la Rosa today in a win over the Angels. Buccholz pitched eight strong innings in the 19 inning marathon that ended in a tough loss. Looking at the game stats for each, what stands out is that all the guys are turning in quality starts, i.e., over five innings and need only some decent run support for all to have wins.

Still 15.5 games out and 5.5 behind the Rays for the cellar. A series with the lowly Astros is coming up, which may give Boston a chance to rack up some wins and get some confidence in these young pitchers. Out of the basement may be too much to hope for at this point in the season, but a respectable finish would serve the team well going into next year.
